First Day Back @ UK

Today was the first day of classes for UK students. I am taking 18 hours this semester, but this semester is almost a “turning point” in my college career. Despite the fact that if I had followed the “four year plan,” I would be graduating after this semester, I can finally see the “light at the end of the tunnel” with only two and a half more semesters to go before graduation. Once I have a degree in Linguistics, I will be able to... uh... well, I don't really know what you are supposed to do with a Linguistics degree, but whatever it is, I hope it's something in Europe or some foreigncountry with cool people. :)

The classes I am taking this semester are, German, Spanish, Linguistics 201, Linguistics 202, German Film and Russian Film. All of these classes are classes that I actually wanted to take thus making it the first semester that I take what ever I like; another reason why this is a “turning point” semester. So far I am excited about the three classes I have already taken today, Spanish (because the guy is a native speaker,) German (because the guy has a much better accent than my previous German teacher,) and Linguistics 202 (because the professor seems to be a young nerd like me.)

Tonight, D-well, Frith and I all got together for a little spaghetti and some Scrabble. During the game, I realized what a horrible speller I am and started to question why I am a Linguistics major... We kept Dictionary.com open as our “proof” that our silly words existed. D-well threw some random letters on the board that formed a word that sounded valid, but none of us had heard it before. We laughed at the letters he put down – Q-U-I-M and he removed them from the board knowing that he couldn't just make up words. I, however was not convinced that the word “quim” was just gibberish so I pulled up the trusty Dictionary.com and typed in “quim.” It turns out that it is in fact a valid English word, but quite the interesting word at that. If you are really that interested, you can look it up yourself. After we read the definition we burst into uncontrollable laughter and D-well happily placed his letters back onto the board to score some major points.
